About Isha Vidhya

As a part of Isha’s social outreach programs, Isha Vidhya rural schools have been established in villages (under the umbrella of Isha Education, founded in 2005) to provide high quality school education to underprivileged rural children, who cannot otherwise access or afford it. In addition, in 2012, Isha Vidhya began to carry out critical interventions to improve the quality of education in rural Government schools, for which Isha Vidhya created its ‘Government School Improvement Program’ (GSIP).

Isha Vidhya schools distinguish themselves, as they:

• Take education beyond literacy and rudimentary skills
• Strive to make children fluent in English and adept in computer skills
• Adopt a nurturing approach to education, helping children realize their full potential
• Promote education for girls
• Increase educational awareness in rural communities while preserving local identities and culture
• Equip rural youth with skills to rise above 'hopeless' situations of the past

Isha Vidhya currently operates 9 schools in Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh. The schools presently have 7115 children (46% girls), with about 61% of students on free education supported by donations under the Isha Vidhya scholarship program.

Under the ‘Government School Improvement Program’, Isha Vidhya has currently adopted 56 Government schools in Tamil Nadu, which impact over 34000 children. In Andhra Pradesh, the project carries out direct intervention in 460 Government schools in Kuppam, Chittoor district, which are benefiting over 38000 children and 2000 Government teachers.

What your donation will be used for:

Full educational support

Your donation provides a child with all their educational needs including tuition, books, notebooks, uniforms, transport and nutritious noon meals for one academic year.

Scholarships

Even nominal school fees are beyond the means of some rural families. Recognizing this challenge, Isha Vidhya provides scholarships which cover students’ tuition, notebooks and textbooks for one academic year.

Lab and classrooms for 11th and 12th standard

Each new Isha Vidhya classroom facilitates the education of 40 children every year. These spacious, well-ventilated classrooms are designed in such a way that both teachers and children enjoy learning within. Additional lab rooms enhance the curriculum with practical, hands-on learning. These labs, designed for physics, chemistry, math and computer-aided learning, benefit the entire school, which, at full capacity, will accommodate 1,100 students. The additional classrooms will support the expansion of the schools into higher classes up to 12th standard.

Expansion of our government school improvement program (GSIP)

Support us in extending the innovative approach and methodology from Isha Vidhya signature schools to government schools throughout India. Interventions in over 500 schools currently benefit more than 70,000 students, with plans for continued expansion. Goals of the adoption project include development of skilled teachers, improvement of student-teacher ratio, and improving literacy and numeracy through the introduction of remedial programs as well as high-impact learning tools and methods to foster the holistic development of the child.
